Israel ordered by top UN court to allow food and medical aid into Gaza

The UN’s top court has issued a ruling directing Israel to facilitate the unimpeded flow of aid into Gaza to prevent a looming famine. The International Court of Justice (ICJ) unanimously decided that Israel must act promptly to allow the delivery of urgently needed basic services and humanitarian assistance. This follows concerns of an imminent famine in Gaza, with warnings that the region could face severe food shortages within weeks.

Israel has denied allegations of blocking aid, with the Israeli foreign ministry emphasizing its efforts to enhance aid delivery into Gaza through various channels, including land, air, and sea. The ministry attributed the crisis in Gaza to Hamas and the ongoing conflict in the region.

The recent judgment by the ICJ came in response to a request from South Africa to reinforce an earlier order issued to Israel to prevent genocidal acts in Gaza. While ICJ rulings are legally binding, the court lacks the authority to enforce them, with the UN Security Council being the sole UN entity capable of introducing measures to ensure compliance.

The ICJ highlighted the urgent need for aid in Gaza, stating that the entire population of 2.2 million people faced high levels of acute food insecurity. The court expressed grave concerns that famine was already beginning to take hold in the region, with reports of casualties due to malnutrition and dehydration.

Furthermore, the ICJ urged Israel to take immediate and effective steps, in collaboration with the United Nations, to ensure the unobstructed provision of essential services and humanitarian aid in Gaza. This includes supplies such as food, water, electricity, fuel, shelter, clothing, hygiene products, and medical supplies.

Recent months have seen significant challenges in aid delivery to Gaza, with accusations of lengthy delays and rigorous checks by Israel on aid trucks entering from Egypt. Israel has also accused Hamas of diverting aid meant for civilians.

The current conflict traces back to an attack on 7 October, where Hamas-led gunmen crossed into Israel, resulting in casualties and hostages. The escalating violence has claimed thousands of lives and remains a pressing issue in the region.

This ruling underscores the urgent need for concerted efforts to alleviate the humanitarian crisis in Gaza and prevent further suffering among the civilian population.
