At least three killed in raid on Haiti central bank

In Haiti, violence continues to escalate as police thwarted an attack on the country’s central bank, the Bank of the Republic of Haiti (BRH). At least three individuals were killed during the confrontation, with reports suggesting up to four casualties and a guard sustaining injuries. The incident, which occurred in Port-au-Prince’s business district, comes amidst a wave of unrest following mass prison breaks and the resignation of the prime minister.

BRH expressed gratitude towards security forces for their swift response in protecting the community. The bank, a vital institution in the capital city, remains operational despite the ongoing turmoil. The recent violence has been attributed to clashes with notorious gang leader Jimmy Chérizier, known as “Barbecue,” resulting in a state of emergency in the region.

As the crisis unfolds, efforts are being made to establish an interim government and a transitional presidential council to address the chaos. Amidst growing concerns, countries like the United States and Germany have evacuated embassy staff from the area. The situation remains volatile, prompting the need for urgent action to restore order and security in Haiti.
