Eyewitnesses recount chaos and fear as gunmen open fire in Moscow concert hall

An attack at a Moscow concert hall on March 22, 2024, has resulted in a tragic loss of at least 40 lives and left 100 injured, according to Russian security services. The incident occurred at Crocus City Hall in Krasnogorsk, where four individuals dressed in camouflage opened fire, as confirmed by social media footage verified by the BBC.

The concert hall’s roof caught fire and collapsed while people were waiting to see a rock band perform. Russia’s state news reported that the venue was engulfed in flames and smoke, with a significant portion of the building ablaze. The Russian Foreign Ministry has labeled the attack as a “terrorist attack,” and images from the scene show the extent of the devastation.

Emergency services are on site, with reports indicating that some attendees are still trapped inside the burning hall. The Federal Security Service (FSB) has dispatched special services to assist in the rescue efforts. Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova has called on the international community to condemn the heinous act, describing it as a “monstrous crime.”

Eyewitness accounts have described the chaotic scene inside the concert hall, with individuals recounting the sounds of gunshots and explosions, followed by a stampede as people attempted to flee. Russian media reports that over 6,200 tickets had been sold for the concert, where the band Picnic was scheduled to perform.

In light of the recent shooting, security measures have been heightened at airports and stations in Russia. The White House has expressed condolences for the victims of the attack, calling the images “horrible and hard to watch.” This incident comes shortly after President Vladimir Putin’s re-election and amidst the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, although he has yet to comment on the tragedy.

As the world grapples with the aftermath of this senseless act of violence, it serves as a stark reminder of the ongoing threat posed by extremism. The international community must stand together in solidarity against such atrocities to ensure the safety and security of all individuals.
