Firefighters in Southampton persist in battling ‘deep-seated’ blaze

Fire crews are currently working to extinguish a “deep-seated” fire near the Southampton FC’s St Mary’s Stadium in the United Kingdom. The fire broke out at industrial units close to the stadium, causing a large plume of smoke to be visible over the city on Wednesday afternoon. The fire has led to road closures in the area and residents are being advised to keep windows and doors closed.

The fire involved plastics and required over 100 firefighters to attend the scene. Crews are still working to put out hotspots that are still burning and fire investigators will determine the cause of the blaze. Despite the fire being brought under control, crews are unable to enter the building due to partial collapse and are applying water externally to extinguish the flames.

Southampton City Council has warned residents not to disturb any debris from the fire and to leave it alone if found on their property. The South Central Ambulance Service reported one person treated for smoke inhalation, but there were no other injuries.

The fire caused the cancellation of Southampton FC’s match against Preston North End, but a new date for the fixture will be announced. A decision on whether Saturday’s match against Sunderland will proceed has not yet been made.

The fire service anticipates a prolonged presence in the area as they work to fully extinguish the blaze. The cause of the fire remains under investigation as crews continue their efforts to contain the situation.
