NBC News exit poll results show that immigration was the top priority for South Carolina GOP primary voters. According to the poll, 37% of voters ranked immigration as the most important issue, followed by the economy, foreign policy, and abortion. Among immigration-focused voters, 82% supported Trump, while only 18% backed Haley.
In terms of border security, nearly 7 in 10 voters trust Trump more than Haley to handle the issue. The majority of voters also believe that most undocumented immigrants in the U.S. should be deported to their home countries.
This shift in perspective is evident compared to the 2016 primary, where more voters favored offering undocumented immigrants a chance to apply for legal status.
Looking ahead to the general election, Trump aides and allies are urging the former president to focus on broader themes and unify the Republican Party. Despite his commanding win in South Carolina, Trump’s campaign is planning for the future, including Super Tuesday.
On the Democratic side, Biden campaign co-chair Cedric Richmond criticized Trump’s comments on Black Americans, calling them “insulting” and “racist.” He emphasized that Black voters are not uninformed and will see through Trump’s pandering.
Meanwhile, Nikki Haley, despite her loss in South Carolina, vowed to continue her presidential campaign. She highlighted the importance of offering voters a choice and expressed gratitude for the opportunity to be part of the race.
As the primary season continues, the political landscape remains dynamic, with various candidates and campaigns vying for support and recognition. The results of the South Carolina primary reflect shifting priorities and alliances, setting the stage for further developments in the race for the presidency.
