UPDATE | Ottawa police initially referred to the tragic event on Berrigan Drive as a mass shooting, but have since corrected the record, clarifying that there was no shooting involved. The situation is still developing, and updates will be provided as they become available.
In a devastating incident late Wednesday night in Barrhaven, six individuals, including a mother, her four young children, and a family acquaintance, were found dead inside a townhouse. Ottawa police Chief Eric Stubbs shared that first responders received two 911 calls around 10:52 p.m. and arrived at the scene on Berrigan Drive quickly.
The victims have been identified as a family from Sri Lanka who were newcomers to Canada. The family members include Darshani Banbaranayake Gama Walwwe Darshani, Ekanyake, Inuka Wickramasinghe, Ashwini Wickramasinghe, Rinyana Wickramasinghe, and Kelly Wickramasinghe. Ekanyake’s husband, who was injured, is currently hospitalized in stable condition. Another man, Amarakoonmubiayansela Ge Gamini Amarakoon, also lost his life in the tragedy.
The suspect, Febrio De-Zoysa, a Sri Lankan national believed to be a student in Canada, has been charged with six counts of first-degree murder. De-Zoysa was apprehended at the scene, and there is currently no ongoing risk to public safety.
Police Chief Stubbs described the incident as a senseless act of violence against innocent individuals and expressed condolences for the unimaginable loss. A vigil has been established for the victims at Palmadeo Park, while police continue to ask the public to avoid the crime scene.
The community of Barrhaven is in shock and mourning the tragic loss of their neighbors. Residents, including Barrhaven resident David Brose, expressed disbelief and sorrow over the incident. Nepean MPP Lisa MacLeod and Ottawa Mayor Mark Sutcliffe have also shared their condolences and shock over the heartbreaking event.
The use of an edged weapon in the homicides was confirmed by police. While the motive remains unknown, investigators do not believe it to be related to intimate partner violence. Counsellors are available to offer support to those affected by the tragedy.
