The WBZ Weather Team has issued a NEXT Weather Alert for a powerful winter storm headed towards New England. The National Weather Service has also issued a Winter Storm Warning for parts of central and western Massachusetts on Sunday and Monday, with a Winter Weather Advisory in effect for eastern Massachusetts.
The storm is expected to bring a mix of rain and snow on Sunday, with snow beginning to accumulate more readily after dark. Overnight, snow is expected in most areas across Massachusetts, except for the Cape and Islands. The precipitation will continue into Monday, tapering off around the evening commute.
The highest snow accumulation is expected in the elevated areas of southern and Central New England, including the Worcester Hills, with lighter amounts closer to the coastline. Winds are not expected to be a major concern, but gusts between 30-50 mph are possible along the immediate coastline and over the Cape and Islands.
Coastal flooding is also a concern, with high tides on Monday potentially causing minor flooding and splashover. This storm is part of a pattern of active weather in Massachusetts since December, with this weekend’s storm being the 10th to hit the Boston area.
Since the start of December, a parade of storms has been steadily marching across the country, bringing Boston nearly 13″ of water. This is the fifth most on record for the December-January combo, the most since 1987.
For frequent updates on the storm, residents are advised to stay tuned to WBZ-TV, WBZ.com, and CBS News Boston.
Historically, the Boston area has seen its fair share of powerful winter storms, and this latest one continues the trend of active weather in the region. As residents continue to monitor the storm’s progress, it’s crucial to stay informed and prepared for any potential impacts.
