Man sues government for $9.5M after crashing snowmobile into parked Black Hawk helicopter

A snowmobile collision with a Black Hawk helicopter has sparked a federal lawsuit in Massachusetts, with Jeff Smith seeking $9.5 million in damages for injuries sustained in the crash. Smith, who lost the use of his left arm and has faced ongoing medical challenges since the 2019 incident, is holding the military responsible for the accident.

The crash occurred when Smith encountered the parked helicopter on a snowmobile trail, resulting in severe injuries that have impacted his ability to work and carry out daily tasks. Smith’s lawyers argue that the crew of the Black Hawk helicopter was negligent in parking the aircraft on a trail frequented by snowmobilers, leading to the collision.

Despite attempts by the government to dismiss the case, Smith is determined to seek justice for the harm he has suffered. The lawsuit highlights the dangers of military aircraft utilizing civilian recreational areas and raises questions about the responsibility of the crew in ensuring the safety of others in the vicinity.

For Smith, the lawsuit represents a chance to secure the necessary funds for a procedure that could significantly improve his quality of life. With hopes pinned on a positive outcome in court, Smith looks towards a future where he can regain some of the freedom and independence he lost due to the tragic accident.
