As Houstonians gear up for Rodeo season, immersing themselves in the rich history of the Lone Star State, U.S. Coins and Jewelry at 8435 Katy Freeway offers a unique opportunity to connect with Texas heritage. Throughout the month, the collectors shop is showcasing a fascinating display of Texas history artifacts.
The collection features items from the time when Texas stood as its own republic, including the paper currency it printed from March 2, 1836, to Dec. 29, 1845, when Texas officially became the 28th state of the Union. Visitors can marvel at an original copy of the Texas Declaration of Independence, one of only 12 known to exist, printed shortly after its signing on March 2, 1836.
Also on display is a broadside copy of the famed “Travis Letter” written by Col. William B. Travis on Feb. 24, 1836, rallying support for the Alamo’s defenders with the iconic phrase “Victory or Death”. Additionally, a signed letter dated Jan. 18, 1856, from U.S. senator Sam Houston concerning the development of railroads in Houston is included in the collection.
March marks Texas History Month, making this exhibit a perfect opportunity for both native Texans and newcomers to reflect on the state’s unique past and its journey towards independence. Whether you’re a history buff, a curious visitor, or a parent looking for an educational outing during spring break, this display is a must-see. The exhibit will be open for viewing until March 30.
