What a night at the Bafta film awards! Oppenheimer picked up the most prizes. David Tennant brought a dog, Barry Keoghan showed love for Sophie Ellis-Bextor and Da’Vine Joy Randolph cracked on to Chiwetel Ejiofor. Here are some of the top moments you might have missed from the ceremony and behind the scenes.
There wasn’t a single British male up for best actor or supporting actor this year, something that supporting actress nominee Rosamund Pike recognized on the red carpet. But the Brits received a lot of love from across the pond from Emma Stone, Robert Downey Jr, and Keegan Michael-Key, who all celebrated their wins at the Sunday night’s awards ceremony. Stone even learned some new British slang when asked about “having a chinwag”.
US star Da’Vine Joy Randolph, who is a fully paid-up Anglophile, started her career in London’s West End, and gave an emotional speech when she won the award for best supporting actress for her role as grieving mother Mary in The Holdovers.
Cillian Murphy was the first Irish-born performer to win a best actor Bafta, and host David Tennant was an all-round success. Michael J Fox’s appearance brought many to tears, and Sophie Ellis-Bextor’s performance of Murder on the Dancefloor was much talked about.
The Zone of Interest won outstanding British film and 20 Days in Mariupol picked up the prize for best documentary. Samantha Morton, who received this year’s Bafta Fellowship, grew up in the care system and dedicated her award to every child in care.
She said film had changed her life and led her there, and that representation matters. Lastly, she addressed the challenges for the British film industry.
