Rescue Efforts Underway After Avalanche in Jones Pass Backcountry
The Colorado Department of Transportation has closed the westbound lanes of U.S. 40 over Berthoud Pass as rescue personnel search for any victims caught in an avalanche. The Alpine Rescue Team is leading the search in the Jones Pass backcountry area, and while there are currently no known victims, the high winds have halted helicopter search efforts.
According to Steve Wilson of the Alpine Rescue Team, personnel are being sent in via snowmobile to access the avalanche site. Jones Pass, located west-southwest of Berthoud Pass, is accessible off a hairpin turn on U.S. 40 near Empire.
This recent avalanche comes just six days after several small slides rolled off the highway embankments and partially buried 10 vehicles. The road over Berthoud Pass was closed for three days as crews worked to clear the snow.
As rescue efforts continue, we are reminded of the dangers and risks associated with traveling in avalanche-prone areas. The historic significance of this topic is rooted in the ongoing challenges faced by transportation crews and rescue teams in keeping these mountainous roads safe for travelers.
