The VFW Sports Center in Bismarck, North Dakota has long been a beloved community hub for ice-based sports and recreational activities since its construction in 1986. Serving as the premier ice rink in the capital city, the center has been home to various activities such as curling, hockey, figure skating, and free skating, as well as hosting the Bismarck Bobcats hockey team.
With the area’s population increasing, the need for a larger and more modern facility became apparent, leading to a $16 million renovation and expansion project. The VFW Sports Center is part of the larger Tom O’Leary Complex, which includes various amenities such as tennis courts, a golf course, and the Municipal Country Club. The center’s importance in the community made it a priority for the Bismarck Parks and Recreation Team to upgrade and expand the facility.
After over 30 years of service, renovations were needed to meet the growing demand for ice activities, including the addition of a new ice rink. The $16.6 million project was made possible through partner contributions and campaign donations. The new First International Bank & Trust Arena features 310 seats, reinforced walls, and an electronic scoreboard, catering to hockey, figure skating, and free skating activities.
In addition to the new rink, the expansion also includes a concession stand, skate rental area, additional locker rooms, multipurpose spaces, office and storage space, sports medicine rooms, and more. The renovations aim to provide a more convenient and accessible experience for visitors, with features like a connected Zamboni room and soft rubber flooring for seamless movement between areas.
The upgrades not only enhance the center’s amenities but also open up opportunities for hosting events, parties, and tournaments throughout the year. The hope is that these developments will continue to fulfill the original mission of the VFW Sports Center — to offer a safe and enjoyable place for residents to participate in activities and come together as a community.
