Tragic Death of Jockey in Kent Horse Race
On February 4, 2024, jockey Keagan Kirkby, 25, tragically passed away following a fall during the Charing point-to-point horse race in Kent. Kirkby’s horse veered off course and collided with the side of a jump, leading to fatal injuries. Despite efforts from the on-course medical team and air ambulance crew, Kirkby did not survive.
Kirkby, who worked at the stables of renowned trainer Paul Nicholls, was described as a hardworking and passionate individual. Having joined Nicholls’ stables in 2019, Kirkby was even nominated for an industry-wide employees’ award in 2024. His tragic death has left the racing community in mourning.
The Injured Jockeys Fund confirmed that the accident occurred during the final race of the event when the horse ran through the wing of a jump. A wing is a plastic railing that guides horses towards jumps.
In response to the devastating news, British Horseracing Authority chief executive Julie Harrington expressed deep sadness and extended condolences to Kirkby’s family, friends, and everyone at Paul Nicholls’ yard. The entire racing industry is mourning the loss of someone so young and full of potential.
