During the recent storm in Jefferson City, Missouri, Cole County first responders sprang into action to assist those affected by the severe weather. One person was taken to the hospital after roads became flooded due to the storm, leading to challenging conditions across the city.
According to Jefferson City Fire Department assistant chief Jay Niemeyer, firefighters were called to rescue individuals trapped in three cars on Edgewood Drive and Creek Trail Drive around 9:30 p.m. Fortunately, emergency responders were able to help occupants from two of the vehicles safely reach land, while the third car’s occupants managed to make it to safety on their own. One individual with minor injuries was transported to the hospital by Cole County EMS.
The storm, which brought heavy rain, hail, and even a tornado to parts of mid-Missouri, left a significant impact on the area. Two inches of rain fell in Jefferson City, causing power outages for hundreds of customers from Three Rivers Electric Cooperative and Ameren. Prior to the flooding on the roads, the Jefferson City Fire Department had already conducted a water rescue for a stranded boater on the Missouri River as the storm approached.
Niemeyer cautioned drivers about the potential for further flooding if more rain were to hit Jefferson City. The storm had already filled the city’s creeks and waterways, presenting a risk of recurring flooding issues. He advised motorists to avoid driving through water-covered roads to ensure their safety.
In addition to the road flooding, the city witnessed numerous low-lying areas affected by rising waters earlier in the evening, with water levels receding within an hour. Niemeyer highlighted the importance of staying vigilant in such weather conditions to prevent accidents and injuries.
As the community continues to recover from the storm, residents are encouraged to follow safety guidelines and monitor weather updates to stay informed about any potential risks. Keeping communication lines open and supporting one another during challenging times is crucial for the well-being of all individuals. Let’s stay united in navigating through these uncertain weather events and prioritize safety above all else.
