Senn High School in Chicago’s Edgewater neighborhood has been the site of a tragic shooting incident. On January 31st, 16-year-old Daveon Gibson was killed and two other Senn students were injured in a broad daylight shooting on Thorndale Avenue.
Two teenagers, 17-year-old Kashawn Prude and a 14-year-old, have been charged in connection to this deadly incident. They are students from Uplift Community High School, located in Uptown Chicago.
According to prosecutors from the Cook County State’s Attorney’s office, there had been an altercation between the defendants and the victims before the shooting occurred. Kashawn Prude is said to have been driving a stolen Honda, while the 14-year-old suspect fired into the crowd of students walking along Thorndale Avenue.
Witnesses to the shooting facilitated in identifying the suspects, while video footage showed them ditching the car and going back to school. Investigators found the stolen vehicle and placed both suspects in custody on February 20th.
In court, it was revealed that Prude had previously been arrested eight times for various crimes. Given his criminal record, the judge handling the case deemed him a threat to the community and determined that electronic monitoring is not sufficient for him.
This tragic event has prompted the Chicago Police Department to increase patrols around high schools during dismissal and arrival times. As the community mourns the loss of Daveon Gibson and hopes for justice, the impact of this incident continues to be felt across the city.
