Rugby Star Louis Rees-Zammit Pursuing NFL Dream
Louis Rees-Zammit, the 23-year-old rugby player from Wales, has announced his pursuit of a career in the NFL after switching from rugby union. He has joined the NFL’s international player pathway (IPP) and has moved to Florida to start a 10-week training program in hopes of securing a place on an American football team in 2024.
Rees-Zammit expressed his excitement about the opportunity, stating, “My pursuit to be on the NFL is alive, and I am excited to see what the next 10 weeks holds.” He shocked the rugby world in January with his decision to leave rugby union in favor of pursuing a career in American football.
The rigorous training program includes training as a wide receiver and running back, with Rees-Zammit aiming to impress NFL scouts in March. He emphasized the intensity of the training, expressing his anticipation of a pro day at the end of the 10-week program.
The transition was described as the “hardest decision” of his life, but Rees-Zammit feels it was the right time for him to make the change. He acknowledged the support of Wales head coach Warren Gatland and reassured that if the NFL endeavor does not work out, he would consider returning to rugby.
Historically, transitions from professional rugby to the NFL are rare but not unheard of. The most notable example is former England rugby player Christian Wade, who successfully transitioned to the NFL and signed with the Buffalo Bills in 2019.
Rees-Zammit’s bold decision has garnered significant attention within the sports community, as enthusiasts eagerly anticipate the results of his NFL pursuit. His commitment to the 10-week training program and potential future in American football has sparked discussions about the versatility and adaptability of athletes across different sports.
